| Early Childhood Investment Corporation - Moving Toward Quality Child Care Conf.
Early Childhood Investment Corporation hosted a Moving Toward Quality Child Care conference 3.22.07 for ECIC staff, child care providers, and state and community leaders to develop strategies to advance quality childcare in Michigan. Birth to five early childhood education and early child care program experts and practitioners discussed their experiences and made suggestions to develop policy relating to our youngest learners arriving at kindergarten safe, healthy and ready to succeed in school. Access to quality child care, legislative support to make early childhood investments our state's first priority, family and community financial resources for infants, toddlers and pre-school children, and great starts for Michigan's successful 21st century workforce, were some of the topics. Organized by the Early Childhood Investment Corporation (ECIC) of Michigan, over 500 early childhood supporters rallied at the MI State Capitol 5.29.07 for the first annual Star Power Rally. Their message to legislators: support early childhood investments so that our youngest learners, from birth to five, arrive at kindergarten safe, healthy and ready to succeed in school...and, make that our state's first priority. Organized by the Early Childhood Investment Corporation (ECIC) of Michigan, over 500 early childhood supporters rallied at the MI State Capitol 5.29.07 for the first annual Star Power Rally. Their message to legislators: support early childhood investments so that our youngest learners, from birth to five, arrive at kindergarten safe, healthy and ready to succeed in school...and, make that our state's first priority. Parents, teachers, child care providers and children started the day with a healthy breakfast, assembled for an hour-long capitol steps rally featuring award presentations to "Champions of Early Childhood", and received tips on how to maximize visits with legislative policy makers. Early Childhood Investment Corporation (ECIC) of Michigan's Ottawa (County) Great Start Collaborative, on 5.18.07, hosted a national expert on economic development. "Early childhood development is economic development because it improves the quality of the future workforce and creates tremendous cost savings for society. The costs of not investing in early childhood education are just too great to ignore", said Rob Grunewald, Associate Economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis." He continued: "...research on educational performance finds that the best way to invest in human capital is to start well before children reach kindergarten...investment in early childhood development programs brings a real (that is, inflation adjusted) public return of 12 percent and a real total return, public and private, of 16 percent."
